KAVARNA

Like the majority of the towns on the Black Sea coast, Kavarna was founded by Greek colonists in the 5th century BC. However, crucial earthquakes destroyed  the town and the major part of it sank under the sea. In the 2nd century the Romans rebuilt the town and it became an important military and cultural centre of the province, called Malka Skitiya. The town was destroyed by subsequent earthquakes and part of the rocks felt into the sea. Today some architectural remains of the old fortress Bizona can still be seen.
Nowadays the town of Kavarna is an administrative center of the Kavarna municipality. The municipality of Kavarna possesses unique nature, which has predetermined its social and economic standing and future development. The municipality encompasses the most eastern part of the Danube plain and is part of Dobrudzha's coastline. The relief is flat, to flat-hilly.
  A great part of the territory (over 75%) is taken by fruitful cultivated lands. There is plenty of underground waters in the region, especially mineral. There are coal and natural gas fields on the territory of the municipality. The economic sectors of prior importance for the municipality of Kavarna are agriculture, tourism, tobacco and food industry.
Among the best places of interest for visitors of Kavarna is the Town Museum, near the restored medieval baths, that have been turned into a museum, and the old fountain. Together they form an interesting architectural ensemble. The museum reflects the social-economic development of Kavarna from the 5th-6th century till 1940.
Objects representing the culture of the numerous tribes that have inhabited the border province of the Byzantine Empire and  Malka Skitiya, are exposed in the museum. The exposition focuses on the two big cultural-economic centers during the time of the Bulgarian Kingdom and the autonomous Karvun principality in the 14th century - Kaliakra and Kavarna. The two centers  played important roles in the political life on the Balkan Peninsula.
The founders of the Bulgarian state in 681-both proto-Bulgarians and Slavs, are represented by an important ceramic and pottery center opened in the village of Topola, near Kavarna. The numerous Venetian and other Western European coins illustrate the economic and political contacts of the Karvun principality with the Black Sea and Mediterranean worlds.
Today the town of Kavarna grows more and more into an important and prosperous administrative, cultural and tourist center.
